A Photographic Record Of The People & Places of Carlingford & the Cooley Peninsula

People of Carlingford Introduction

My name is Kevin Woods I was born in 1944. in Our Lady of Lourdes hospital Drogheda Co Louth. I am the son of Peter Woods Solicitor and Hilda Margaret Winstanley Woods .My father was native to Carlingford and my mother to Liverpool.
My Grandfather William Woods was a butcher in Newry St and his wife Elizabeth Wheelan also came from Liverpool.
They established the butchery business in 1897 where The Londis shop now stands in Newry St. The Woods’ came from Piedmont and can trace the family back to James Woods a blacksmith and pike maker in the Rebellion of 1798.

A View Of CarlingfordI  am one of 6 children and grew up in Ghan House.  I worked most of my life in PJ Carroll Tobacco Company until I retired as Sales Manager in 2004. In the interim I married Jackie Flanagan from Dundalk and having lived in Killarney for 10 years returned 32  years ago to the place I have always wanted to be where we reared our 9 children.

I have been so fortunate that God choose this place for me to live out my life .I  have always wanted to give something back to this community that might last and so I set out over a year ago to record with the support of so many families, as much knowledge as I could about this place and its people.  I am not done yet. I expect if God spares me that it will take another few years to complete.

In the meantime there are about 2400 pictures here for you to enjoy. There are probably some mistakes and indeed some omissions from the pictures.  I would be grateful if you would let me know what has to be corrected or added to. In the meantime I will continue to call and to gather.

By way of explanation if you are looking for a street or place, the search term would be “Newry St” or “Sq.” or “River Lane” or “Dundalk St” etc...
All football teams and school photos are under “School”
All mixed groups are under “People of Carlingford” or "People of Cooley" or "People of Lordship" etc.

If you know someone who would like to view these and can’t use a computer they can be viewed without cost and without having to buy a meal in “The Kingfisher Bistro” Kearney’s Grain Store Dundalk Street. Just ask the girls to turn on the screen and the family you want to see.

Sincerely
  Kevin
